Smt SmdUsing SMT Prototype Stencils
The older method of through-hole technology for circuit board construction has largely been replaced by the surface mount technology method or SMT. Instead of using component leads that are inserted into holes in the circuit board, SMT uses a stencil to transfer solder paste onto the surface of a bare board. Surface mount devices (SMD) are then soldered to those contact points.
Advantages of SMT Stencils
Some important advantages of SMT stencils are:
- Enables the use of smaller components
- SMT parts are usually cheaper
- Assembly can be more easily automated
- SMDs can be placed on both sides of the board
- Lower resistance leads to better performance for high frequency parts
Using Prototype Stencils for PCB Construction
While not as easy to use as prototyping tools like breadboards, SMT stencils are fast becoming a useful prototyping tool for printed circuit boards. SMT stencils are quickly becoming a useful prototyping to for circuit board construction
The general process for using a prototype stencil is described below:
1. Secure your board to a work table using some type of right angle support on the bottom and top of the board. Be careful to keep tape from touching the surface of the board
2. Align the stencil over the SMT pads on the circuit board and tape it down to secure it.
3. Place a line of solder on one side of the stencil
4. Use a squeegee and make a single pass over the solder apertures to apply the solder paste
5. Next, the prototype stencil should be removed
6. Place SMDs into the solder paste
7. Follow your manufacturer’s recommended method to heat the board to enable re-flow solder
Some more complex designs might need to add a few steps, but most designs will generally follow this method for using a SMT prototype stencil.
