A Simple Guide To WordPress Plugin Installation
The choice of available plug ins for WordPress users is huge, including, among many others, plug ins for post word counts, regularly updated weather reports and rating systems and they can therefore not be included in the core files of WordPress. Designed for WordPress by volunteers, they can be downloaded free and, although considered safe and tested thoroughly, it should be remembered that they are still works in progress, thus maybe requiring a little attention. Users may also want to find out how to copy wordpress with built in plug ins on some tutorial websites (for instance Tamba2 offers very clear, in depth instructions).
Available plug ins may be located through the Add New tab in the Administration/ Plugins panel; alternatively users can access the Plugins Repository website of WordPress. Users choosing to create their own plug ins may want to have a look at the Plugin Resources page.Compatibility to various WordPress versions can be determined by taking a look at the Plugin Compatibility index.
Adding plug ins is achieved through one of two ways, with the WordPress installer offering the simplest option. Using this built in installer, users can find, download, upload and finally activate plug ins with ease through the Plugin tab within their Administration panel. The other, more traditional way is to search for zip files, download, expand and install them; with activation being processed through the user's Plugins Management tab.
While WordPress authors/ developers attempt to make installations for plug ins as simple as humanly possible, sometimes a plug in may well require more user skills than some others and users need to consider various important issues before beginning installations. To start with, all information provided - readme.txt files combined with text on the webpage, for instance - should be read carefully. The installation will seem much easier once all relevant information has been digested.
As all plug ins require down/ uploading for installation, the user needs to be familiar with down/ upload processes and may also have to know how FTP is used. They may also entail modifications to WordPress templates or files, which requires familiarity with HTML, PHP, CHMOD and CSS. Any modifications within these files and templates need to be recorded by making notes within the code, consisting of comments both before and after changes made, as well as saving a text file detailing changes onto the desktop. This will be a useful help if changes need to be repeated due to problems arising in the future.
Back ups should be created before and after installing plug ins and/ or making any necessary changes. It is preferable to have a second copy (particularly of the initial, pre-installation back up) of the back ups saved on the hard drive (see available tutorials to learn how to copy wordpress with added plug ins).
